# Creating and managing segments

> Learn how to create, edit, and use segments to track your ticket sales by channel, campaign, or sales point.

Segments let you label sales by the channel or context in which they happen — for example, a social media campaign, a box office window, or a partner reseller. Once assigned, every sale carries that segment tag so you can compare performance across sources.

## Create a segment

1. Go to **Segments** in your organizer dashboard.
2. Click add button to open the new segment form.
3. Fill in the fields:
   - **Color** — pick a color to visually distinguish this segment in reports and lists.
   - **Unique code** — a short, URL-safe identifier (e.g. `fb-spring`, `box-office-main`). This code appears in tracking links and cannot be changed after the segment is used in a sale, so choose carefully.
   - **Display name** — the human-readable label shown in the dashboard and exports (e.g. *Facebook Spring Campaign*).
   - **Description** — an optional note for your team explaining what this segment tracks.
4. Click **Save** to create the segment.

## Edit a segment

Open the **Segments** list, find the segment you want to update, and click edit button.

You can change the **color**, **display name**, and **description** at any time. The **unique code** is locked once the segment has recorded at least one sale to preserve historical data integrity.

## Use a segment with a short link

You can generate a short link from the Events page for an event information page, or from the Program page for checkout for a specific date. For full details, see [Short links and social sharing](/organizers/sharing-and-embedding/short-links-and-social-sharing.md).

1. Open the event from **Events**, or open the scheduled date from **Program**. For sharing from the Program page, see [Program event actions and settings](/organizers/events-and-program/program-event-actions-and-settings.md).
2. Click share button to open the sharing panel.
3. In the **Segment** dropdown, select the segment to associate with the link.
4. The short link updates automatically. Copy and distribute it — every purchase made through that link will be attributed to the selected segment.

The **Segment** dropdown appears only when segments exist.

## Use a segment at the box office checkout

For the full box office checkout flow, see [In-person sales and registrations](/organizers/box-office-and-orders/in-person-sales-and-registrations.md).

1. Select the seats or ticket types for the booking.
2. Click **Sale** to open the booking-information pop-up.
3. In the **Segment** section, open the dropdown and select the appropriate segment (e.g. *Walk-in*, *Phone Order*).
4. Complete the rest of the sale and click **Sell** — the booking is recorded under that segment.

The **Segment** section appears only when segments have been configured.

## Best practices for naming and organizing segments

- **Be consistent with codes.** Use a predictable pattern such as `channel-campaign-date` (e.g. `ig-summer24`, `email-newsletter-jun`). Consistent codes make filtering and exports far easier.
- **Use display names for clarity.** Codes are for machines; display names are for people. Write display names that any team member can understand at a glance without context.
- **One segment per distinct source.** Avoid reusing a single segment for multiple unrelated channels — it muddies your attribution data.
- **Use colors meaningfully.** Group related segments by color family (e.g. all social media segments in blue, all box office segments in green) so reports are scannable.
- **Archive rather than delete.** If a campaign ends, keep the segment so historical sales data remains intact and comparable.
- **Document in the description field.** Record the campaign goal, date range, or responsible team member in the description. This context is invaluable when reviewing data months later.
